Halberstadt-Zwieberge was an auxiliary camp of Buchenwald for male prisoners established as early as April 1944. The firms Organisation Todt (OT)-Bauleitung-Langenstein, Grün und Bilfinger AG, Firma Bode, Hermann Göring Werke, Firma Bauwen-Magdeburg, Firma Julius Schmidt-Magdeburg, Malachit AG, and Krupp exploited forced laborers from the Halberstadt-Zwieberge camp. Maifisch, Malachit, and Malachit AG functioned as outlying commandos for sections of the camp. Prisoners built tunnels to house an underground aircraft factory. At the height of the project, Halberstadt-Zwieberge contained 5,000 prisoners. The Germans evacuated the camp on April 9, 1945. The Halberstadt-Zwieberge area was liberated on April 11, 1945.
