Definizione

Location: Eastern coast of Africa on the Indian Ocean, bordered in 2000 by Kenya, Mozambique, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi. Capital city: Dar es Salaam History: Colonized by the Germans along with Rwanda and Burundi, the area of Tanzania became a protectorate in the 1880s called German East Africa. The neighboring island of Zanzibar was leased to the Germans by its sultan. The British occupied German East Africa during WWI and afterwards, the League of Nations made the territory a British mandate named Tanganyika and part of British East Africa. Tanganyika gained indepence from Britain in December 1961, followed by Zanzibar in 1963, and Tanganyika and Zanzibar united in October 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. (en-US)
