The Maccabi World Union was founded in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia, in 1921 as the umbrella organization to unite the various Jewish sports clubs in Central and Eastern Europe. Dr. Heinrich Kuhn was the first president. Maccabi was Zionist in orientation, and promoted the need for physical health and training in preparation for settlement in Palestine. The movement established its headquarters in Vienna, Austria, and Brno, Czechoslovakia, and finally Berlin, Germany, in 1929. Under the leadership of second president Heinrich Lellever, Maccabi expanded into an international movement, eventually sponsoring the Maccabiah Games in Palestine. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, the Maccabi office moved to London, England, and Lellever established a headquarters in Palestine. By 1939, there were approximately 200,000 members around the world. The organization came to a halt during the war but was revived afterwards in Britain and in Palestine, with new branches established in the Americas and Australia.
