Definition: The Algemeyner Yidisher Arbeter Bund (Lite, Polyn un Rusland) (General Jewish Workers' Union of Lithuania, Poland and Russia), or Bund, is a Jewish political party and social organization that stresses Yiddish culture, non-Zionist Jewish autonomy, and socialism. The Bund was founded in Russia in October 1897 at a secret meeting in Vilna. In 1914 an independent Bundist political party was established in Poland. The Polish Bund existed until 1948, when it was forced to disband by the communist powers. During World War II, the Bund was involved in numerous resistance activities. In the 1930s the Bund movement spread to the United States, where a World Coordinating Committee of Bundist and Affiliated Socialist Jewish Organizations was established in New York. This organization is affiliated with various Bundist movements around the world. (en-US)
