The Allies liberated Tunisia from Axis occupation on May 7, 1943. The Bizerte concentration camp and other forced labor installations for Jews set up by the Germans and the Italians were also liberated. Major-General Charles-Emmanuel Mast became was appointed the new Vichy resident general. Under the re-instated French administration, Jews of Italian nationality were arrested on charges of collaboration and interned and then released. (en-US)
