Zigeunerlager (Auschwitz II-Birkenau)   Cerca

Definizione

A decree issued by Heinrich Himmler dated December 16, 1942, ordered the deportation of Sinti and Roma (also known as "Gypsies") to Auschwitz-Birkenau. A section in Auschwitz-Birkenau - the so-called "Zigeunerlager" (German: "Gypsy" camp) - was established in February 1943. The Sinti and Roma were not separated but families were kept together in this 'family' camp. Between February 1943 and August 1944, over 20,000 Sinti and Roma were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Most of them were murdered or died due to diseases or deprivation. (en-US)
