Definizione

Location: North central United States, bordered in 2000 by Michigan, Illinois, Idaho, Minnesota, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior. Capital City: Madison History: The area of Wisconsin was originally inhabited by the Ojibwa, Saux, Fox, Kickapoo, Menominee, and Winnebago tribes. The French began exploration of the region in the 17th century and the British acquired it in 1763. Wisconsin then was ceded to the United States in 1783 as part of the Northwest Territory and the first influx of immigrants arrived in the 1820s. Native American resistance was ended in 1832. Wisconsin was admitted to statehood in 1848 and during the Civil War, remained in the Union. In 1869, Wisconsin was the first state to grant female suffrage and developed a progressive, reformist outlook. German and Scandinavian immigrants came in the second half of the 19th century, as the meatpacking, brewery, and dairy farm businesses expanded. During WWII, Wisconsin was a major site for shipbuilding. (en-US)
