Definizione

Definition: When Axis defeat seems inevitable, Turkey enters the war as part of the Allies on February 23, 1945. The end of World War II finds Turkey with a low agricultural output, high inflation, and devalued currency. Literacy rises to 29 percent by 1945 and the people clamor for democracy. As a result, the Turkish government allows the formation of new political parties, direct elections, and universal suffrage. In June 1945, the Soviet Union demands Turkey give control of the Straits to Black Sea powers and cede a large area of northeastern Anatolia to Soviet Georgia. By 1945, the Jewish population in Turkey numbers 76,965. (en-US)
