Location: Eastern United States in the Middle Atlantic region, bordered in 2000 by Pennsylvania, New York, and the Atlantic Ocean. Capital city: Trenton History: The area of New Jersey was the site of the Lenni Lenape tribe and was then colonized by the Dutch, English, Scots-Irish, and Swedes beginning in the 17th century. One of the original thirteen colonies, New Jersey declared statehood in 1776 and was a strategic point in the American Revolutionary War. During the Civil War, New Jersey remained in the Union. During WWII, the US Army used Fort Dix as one of the major infantry training bases. (en-US)
