History:
Originally the site of Algonquian-speakers, the area of Massachusetts was first explored by Europeans in the 16th century. The Pilgrims established the Plymouth colony in 1620 and other Puritans from Britain established successive colonies. Massachusetts was the birthplace of the American Revolution, with the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. During the 19th century, Massachusetts was a leader in religious, social, and educational reform movements. The state remained in the Union during the Civil War with a strong abolitionist movement. After the Civil War, Massachusetts was a destination for European immigrants. Industrial output increased during WWII. (en-US)
