Location: North central Europe, bordered in 1939 by Germany, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea.
Capital city: Copenhagen
History:
Jews received full citizenship in Denmark's 1849 constitution. Two more constitutions were instituted before 1915. Denmark remained neutral during World War I. During the 1930s and 1940s, Denmark's Jewish community assisted Jews fleeing from the Nazis. Denmark declared neutrality when World War II began. During the early years of German occupation (1940-1943), the Danish government effectively protected Danish Jews. When the German police began arresting Jews (October 1-2, 1943), Danes successfully mobilized to help Jews flee to neighboring Sweden. Only 2% of Danish Jewry perished in the Holocaust because of the assistance of the Danish people. After World War II, Denmark recognized Iceland's independence and granted home rule to the Faeroe Islands. After officially incorporating Greenland in 1953, Denmark granted it home rule in 1979. Denmark became one of NATO's founding members (1949) and a member of the European Economic Community (1973). (en-US)
