Definizione

The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) began in London in 1844 for the "improvement of the spiritual condition of young men." Similar clubs formed throughout Great Britain, Australia (1850), and North America (1851). As a nonsectarian, nonpolitical Christian lay movement, the YMCA offers sports, physical education, and camping programs, formal and informal educational programs, and counseling. It also sponsors several hotels, residence halls, and cafeterias. Since the American Civil War (1861-1865), the YMCA has served the American armed forces. This service includes the promotion of educational and recreational facilities in prisoner of war camps. (en-US)
