Definizione

From 1914 to 1922, Egypt was a British protectorate and was then granted independence as a constitutional monarchy under King Fuad I on February 28, 1922. Despite the formal end of the protectorate, the British continued to be a presence in Egypt in a power struggle with the king for control of the nation's affairs. During the 1920s, Egypt was often ruled by decree instead of by acts of the parliament. In August 1936, Egypt signed a treaty of mutual defense and alliance with Britain and became a member of the League of Nations in 1937. Jewish immigration to Egypt increased after WWI. By 1937, the Jewish population numbered approximately 63, 550, with most Jews residing in Cairo and Alexandria. (en-US)
