Isola di Man (UK : campo di internamento)(generico) CercaDefinizione
During World War II the British government operated a number of internment camps on the Isle of Man. The camps were located in and around the city of Douglas, Peel, Ramsey and the Rushen peninsula. Among the Isle of Man internment centers were the women's camps (and later "married" camps), Port St. Mary and Port Erin (the two were also known as the Rushen camp) on the Rushen peninsula. The Palace and Metropole camps in Douglas originally housed Italian internees. In December, 1941, approximately 400 Japanese, Hungarians, Romanians, and Finns were interned at the Palace camp. There was a British subject camp in Douglas known as 18b and a number of camps housed German and Austrian internees. These included the Hutchinson, Central Promenade (also called Central), and Sefton camps in Douglas, the Onchan camp outside of Douglas, the Peveril camp in Peel, and the Mooragh camp (which later housed some Finnish internees) in Ramsey. Other camps in Douglas included Regent, Granville, Villa Marina, and Falcon. In 1942 French nationals from Madagascar were housed in Laxey. Mereside was the Isle of Man camp Headquarters. The commanders of the Isle of Man camps were Lieutenant-Colonel S.W. Slatter, followed by Lieutenant-Colonel R. Baggalay, and Lieutenant-Colonel A.M. Scott. Dame Joanna was the Commandant in the women's camps. Throughout the duration of the war, many Isle of Man camps were vacated or joined with others. There were various instances of camps housing Nazis and Nazi sympathizers with Jews and non-Nazis. The Hutchinson camp closed in March, 1944. In June (1944) only five camps were still in operation. In November (1944) Metropole was closed and Onchan was converted into a POW camp. Mooragh closed on August 2, 1945. On September 5, 1945, the remaining Isle of Man internee population in Port Erin and Peveril departed the island.
