The presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton on January 20, 1993 marked a shift to a Democratic administration. The Lautenberg Amendment, which had facilitated the entry of Russian-speaking Jews to the U.S., had been extended repeatedly. It expired on October 1, 1997, and an attempt was made to renew it. Russian-speaking Jews continued coming to the U.S. in significant numbers. As of 1994, there were an estimated 5,675,000 Jews in the United States. (en-US)
