Definizione

The presidential inauguration of Jimmy Carter on January 20, 1977 marks a shift to a Democratic administration. The flow of Soviet Jewish emigrants rises -- almost 17,000 in 1977, 30,000 in 1978, and over 51,000 in 1979. While they leave the Soviet Union with Israeli visas, a growing majority of these emigrants chose to immigrate directly to the U.S. The Islamic Revolution in Iran (1979) prompts Jewish immigration from that country to the U.S. With the beginning of the 1980s, Soviet Jewish emigration declines sharply.
