Eisenhower negotiates an armistice of the Korean War, which is signed on July 27, 1953. In 1956, the U.S. begins providing economic and military assistance to South Vietnam after South Vietnam refuses to hold free elections scheduled by the Geneva Accords, and North Vietnam responds by pursuing unification of Vietnam by military means.
