Romania transfers Bessarabia and northern Bukovina to the USSR on June 26; many Jews are killed by retreating Romanian troops in these areas. Northern Transylvania is ceded to Hungary on August 30 and southern Dobrudja to Bulgaria on September 7. On September 5, King Carol II abdicates, and Ion Antonescu comes to power. A "National-Iron-Guardist" State is declared September 14. On October 7, German troops enter Romania. Jews are plagued by antisemitic terrorism and confiscation of their property. (en-US)
