On November 5, 1956, János Kádár, a Soviet supported leader, takes power. Thousands of Jews leave the country during and after the revolution. The regime represses political opposition. From February 1958 on, the party carries out a wave of purges, dismissing thousands of army, police, and administration officials from their positions. On June 16, 1958, four leaders of the Hungarian revolution are executed. In January 1962, Kádár attempts a national reconciliation. (en-US)
