The New Course policy of gradual decompression, called "thaw", begins as a result of Joseph Stalin's death on March 5, 1953. Many expelled Jews are allowed to return home in 1953. During these years, factionalism divides the Communist party. From October 23 to November 4, 1956, an anti-Soviet uprising occurs. Imre Nagy heads the anti-Soviet government. Soviet troops suppress the revolution. (en-US)
