Definizione

The Russian Empire under the reign of Tsar Nicholas II in the period before World War I. The Russian-Japanese War (1904) ended in a humiliating defeat for Russia and internal unrest erupted at home. On January 9 (22), 1905, the deadly dispersal of a demonstration in St. Petersburg by authorities leads to the Revolution of 1905. On October 17 (30), 1905, Nicholas II issues the October Manifesto, which makes Russia a constitutional monarchy. The Duma, an elected assembly with limited powers, is established on May 10, 1906. Pogroms occur in 1905-1906. The Second Duma is dissolved on June 3 (16), 1907. November 1 (14), 1907, the Third Duma begins its work. On November 15 (28), 1912, the Fourth Duma begins. On July 16-17 (29-30), 1914, Russia's army begins total mobilization. (en-US)
