Definition:
The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) operated a displaced persons camp in the Italian neighborhood of Cinecitta, Rome, following World War II. The Cinecitta camp was founded by the Allied Commission (A.C.) and originally came under the supervision of the Italian government. UNRRA took over full operations of the camp on August 1, 1946. The Cinecitta camp housed static (individuals in the camp for over thirty days) and transient displaced persons. Cinecittà served as a gathering center for a large number of Jewish refugees and organizations (among them the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Merkaz ha-Plitim, Poalei Zion Hitachdut, Histadrut yechud ha-Tsionim ha-Kelaliyim beltaliyah, and Beit Trumpeldor). The Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (ORT) offered workshops and vocational courses in Cinecittà. The Cinecittà camp was initially designated code IT-83, then later code IT-33. The camp in Cinecittà was classified as an "independent camp." (en-US)
